Richard, who joined Harlequin Brass in 2000, first started playing trombone aged 11 under the direction of David Windle, Head of Music, at the William Rhodes School in Chesterfield.
Between 1982 and 1997 Richard played Bass Trombone with Rhodian Brass from Chesterfield.
Under the tuition of Paul Denison ABSM GBSM he competed with the band from Third Section to Championship Grade following success as National Champions in the second section in 1985.
More recently in the Brass Band circuit, Richard competed with the Ransome Band at the Royal Albert Hall in October 2003 who were placed 7th.
From 1985 - 1990 Richard played with the award winning Derbyshire County Youth Wind Band, under the late Murray Slater, culminating in the band being awarded the National Champions’ crown and 3rd best in Europe awards in 1990.
Richard, a Bank Manager with NatWest, lives with his wife, Tracey, and young family in Chesterfield, North Derbyshire.
