Edward started playing trumpet cornet & piano at the age of 4, and was introduced to the pleasures of brass playing by becoming a member of Castleton and then Holymoorside Village bands.
At the age of 11, Edward was asked to join the ranks of the Championship section Blidworth Miners Welfare Band, appearing on the Blackpool Winter Garden stage to play against the great Championship section bands of the time at the National Mineworkers Contest.
Edward remained at the championship level until 18, joining the City of Sheffield Band at 15. At this time, Edward also joined the trumpet section at the Sheffield Philharmonic Orchestra, and was a founder member of the Occasional Brass Ensemble.
At the age of 18, work commitments meant that Edward was forced to give up playing all together until 10 years later. In 1999, he was asked to help out Dronfield Band as a temporary measure. He hesitantly agreed to pick up his cornet again, and then spent the next two years trying to find out where he’d put his lips.
Since that time, Edward has moved back into regular playing and has now played Repiano for the championship section Stocksbridge Band (previously City of Sheffield) since Christmas 2002. This has included a solo performance on BBC radio and several prestigious contest performances including a 2nd place position at the Yorkshire Area, beating world class bands such as Grimethorpe, Black Dyke and YBS. He has also enjoyed his first performance on the Albert Hall stage in the National Finals. Stocksbridge are currently the Yorkshire Area and Senior Trophy champions.
Edward has also established regular trumpet work with various Orchestras including appearances as Principal Trumpet for the Sheffield Philharmonic. He has also performed with the Sheffield Symphony Orchestra, the Chesterfield Symphony Orchestra, the Hallam Symphonia, and the Yorkshire Wind Orchestra.
In March 2002, Edward was honoured to be asked to play with Harlequin Brass on tour in Holland and is extremely proud to have been a regular player since that time. Edward has also recently taken on the commitment of setting up and running the Harlequin Website. |
